Making Sense

At the beginning of 2nd Grade,  it is important to make sure that students have their first 200 sight words commited to memory.  Moving into higher reading levels will be extremely difficult without these.  Also, the Fundations phonics program moves second graders into more advanced skills.  These include vowel teams (i.e. ai, ay, ee, e, etc.), types of syllables, and spelling rules.  I will post more about these skills as the year progresses.

A huge piece of 2nd Grade reading is building comprehension.  Students need to be able to retell what they have read, make inferences and make connections, and answer text based questions.  In order to build comprehension, I work on increasing students' fluency (reading accurately, smoothly, and with expression).  I tell the students that, "it is difficult for brains to understand what we are reading when we sound like robots".

Finding books or magazines with topics that children are interested in can make a world of difference in terms of motivating them to spend time in books.  Watch for a blog post called "loved books by level".  I will be working to update this resource throughout the year.
