What is Title 1?

Title 1 is a Federal aid program for public schools.  It is designed to support schools with a certain percentage of "at-risk" students in order to make sure that these students are making academic gains.  The Title 1 program is targeted to assist students who may have certain disadvantages, but it is implemented school-wide so that the entire school has access to the program.  For more information you can visit https://www2.ed.gov/programs/titleiparta/index.html.

At Thorpe, the classroom teachers, reading teacher, principal, director of Title 1, and I meet to evaluate test scores and determine which students would benefit from receiving my support.  In kindergarten, I have the flexibility to see students as needed within the classroom setting.  In 1st and 2nd grade, I will see students no shorter than half a year (September - January and/or January-July).  Student groupings are determined by test results, classroom schedules, and the needs of each individual student.  After test results are evaluated in January, your child may be picked up for Title 1 support, discontinued from Title 1 support, or continue with me as they had during the first half of the year.  Classroom teachers, the reading teacher, and I communicate regularly about the needs of each student that I see.
